Worship

Nave interior

An ever-deepening experience of God is what we hope children and adults discover as they participate in worship.

Practical biblical messages, prayers for the need of the world and receiving a personal blessing or receiving communion (Jesus' Body and Blood) are core elements of worship.

St. John's intentionally offers worship in multiple styles and formats, engaging worshipers to experience the timelessness of Jesus’ gifts of Baptism and Eucharist by drawing from both the breadth of music, language, architecture and art forms found in 21st Century Hampton Roads and the rich liturgical heritage of the early unified Christian Church.

Contemplative

This is a small, quiet service without music. The focus is on simplicity and beauty of worship in traditional language (known in the wider Episcopal Church as Rite I).  If you are looking for a time of reflection and meditation, this is the service for you.

Contemporary

Contemporary praise band

This worship opportunity mixes ancient worship patterns with images and a wide variety of sacred and secular musical genres in an emerging ancient-future worship experience.  Everything you need for worship is displayed on two screens at the front of the church.  A live band provides the music.  If you are looking for a worship experience framed in tradition but clothed in the music and images of today, give this worship opportunity a try.

Classic

This service uses the modern language liturgy (known in the wider Episcopal Church as Rite II) with hymns and chants sung by the congregation and led by choir & organ.

St. John’s Exsúltet Organ (Whitesel Opus 1275) was created in 2015 by Viscount of Mondaino, Italy.  The largest Viscount organ in all of North America at its installation, it incorporates the parish's restored 1951 Austin sixteen rank pipe organ (Opus 2171) in its design.   With the equivalent of over ninety ranks of pipes, played on an exquisite three manual French console inspired by Aristide Cavaillé Coll, it fills St. John's acoustically brilliant worship space with glorious sound unparalleled in our region.  Use this link for more information about this amazing instrument.

If you are looking for a classic Anglican expression of worship, then this is the worship opportunity for you.

Healing Eucharist
